Lord Lieutenant Lady Susan Haughey CBE guest of honour for Crawford Street Community Jubilee.
Four days of celebration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee were hosted from 2nd to 5th June by Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Crawford Street, Motherwell. With support from the fund established for Jubilee celebrations by North Lanarkshire Council Holy Trinity provided an all age, inclusive programme of activities. The highlight of the 3 day programme of events was the celebration tea on Friday 3rd June for Crawford Street with over 60 guests at tables in the church grounds with the guest of honour Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Lady Susan Haughey CBE. Lady Haughey was accompanied by Cadet Lieutenants – Warrant Officer Calum Stephens of the ATC and Petty Officer Cadet Mirren McIver of the Sea Cadets. In addressing the party Lady Haughey spoke of the inspiration that Her Majesty the Queen had given to so many over 70 years. A special celebration cake prepared for the occasion by Charlotte Hands was cut at the commencement of the tea by Lady Haughey assisted by one of the oldest members of the church – Ernie Holloway. Following a topical Jubilee quiz; prizes were presented by Lady Haughey for winners of the quiz to Mavis Willis, Robert Marshall and the Currie family team, egg and spoon races to Carly Stewart, to Olga Harding and Cameron Hands for the treasure hunt and winner of the garden darts which were all run by Benjamin Hands. The proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks from the Rector, and all joined in singing of the National Anthem, and Auld Lang Syne. Katharine Kilgour presented Lady Haughey with a floral arrangement.
On Sunday the 5th June the regular Sunday service was held at 9.30 am for the feast of Pentecost. Fr Andrew’ Duff presided at the altar leading the Eucharistic consecration and distribution of communion. The craft work project based upon the ‘royal orb’ of the monarch was installed at the altar for the service. Ken Kennedy led the prayers for the church and the world, and Ian Wilkins was the reader. Katharine Kilgour was the organist. The rector preached on the connection between the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost for the birthday of the church, and the significance of the ‘orb’ of the coronation representing the Christian world. On Sunday evening at 6.00 pm there was a Community Songs of Praise held in church. The guest organist was Mr David Hamilton the director of music at St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Hamilton. The programme of hymns and music included reverences to the jubilee and coronation and themes with particular reference to the reign of the monarch, and to Christian life and witness. Mr Hamilton played a selection of voluntary pieces at the organ including music which was part of the 1953 Coronation service Westminster Abbey. Refreshments were served in the interval for those attending and a retiring collection was made for the Motherwell Churches Christian Aid appeal. The rector Rev Richard Kilgour has said ‘we’ve been delighted to share these celebrations with so many of our community taking part. We have exceeded our expectations by including many people from the wider community in sharing hospitality and fun in the spirit of the jubilee’
